Process

Each design starts out as a sketch somewhere, which is then refined, scanned, and turned into either a template for silk screening, or carved into a block for printing.

If the design is intended for the screen, it is burned on and I hand pull each print. If it’s designated to be a stamp or block print, I carve the design and mount it myself, and from there it goes into steady work as a template. Sometimes there’s slight differences in the position of the print on the fabric, but that’s part of the charm of a handmade item. What you’re getting is truly one-of-a-kind.

I use a variety of fabrics in several gorgeous colors. Linen, cotton, diaper cloth, huck, flour sack cotton, wool, microfiber, terry, canvas, flannel, and chenille will all make an appearance somewhere when I start to sew. I also purchase certified organic fabric wherever possible.

The only ink I’ll use is Permaset. On fabric, Permaset Aqua, which is a 100% solvent-free, water based ink. The beauty of this ink is that it soaks into the fabric, allowing you to feel the texture through the ink instead of the print feeling thick and plastic-like. Once heat set, it’s completely washable, although I do recommend hand washing in cold water to preserve the ink color over time. On paper and for block printing I now use Permaprint Premium, which is also water based and free of toxic chemicals.
